Azogues is a city located in south-central Ecuador. It has an a high elevation due to the fact that it lies in a high Andean valley northeast of Cuenca. The word 'azogues', which means 'mercury' is where the city takes its name from. Based on a 2001 survey, about 30,000 people are living in Azogues Ecuador. The Pan-American highway goes through Azogues.
As the administrative capital of Canar, Azogues is famous for the Panama hats. In this city, you will see a great number of locals living in Azogues Ecuador selling Panama hats along the streets and these hats are actually also made for export. The main industries in Azogues are agricultural trade like grains and fruit, flour milling, hat making, and leather tanning.
Walking along the streets of the city, you will notice the Church of San Francisco de la Virgen de las Nubes perched on top of a hill. If you decide to walk to the church, you will see chickens and other farm animals being sold just below the church. The plaza has a small handicraft shop wherein nuns, who run the place and living in Azogues ecuador, sell local knits and embroidery, among others. You will marvel with the well-prserved buildings with very colonial architecture - high dome painted ceilings.
